Research on the emergence of microcredentials in the vocational training system
The range of qualifications and credentials in Europe and beyond is constantly changing to increase flexibility and enable learners to transfer learning across different settings: education and training institutions, work, leisure, and home. The supply of micro-credentials and short training courses that transcend the boundaries of most national education systems is growing rapidly in Europe and around the world. Policymakers, educators, and teachers see micro-credentials as an innovation that can be used in a variety of ways and offer a wide range of benefits—a kind of universal solution to problems in education and the labor market—and some have begun to integrate micro-credentials into existing practices and policy initiatives. But can microcredentials improve the lifelong learning and employability of those who use them?
